Silla temples, royal tombs and lantern-lit ponds — the open-air museum of Korea’s ancient capital.

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a thousand years, and its treasures are scattered across an easygoing small city. Spend one day on the UNESCO temples in the hills and one in the downtown belt of tombs, an observatory and a night-lit pond. It is an easy KTX ride to nearby Singyeongju station from Seoul or Busan.

Good to know

Take the KTX to Singyeongju station, then a bus or taxi to the sights.
Rent a bike downtown — the tombs, Cheomseongdae and Wolji are close together.
Save Wolji Pond for after dark; it is Gyeongju’s signature night view.
