Why go

Abai Village in Sokcho was settled by refugees from the north and is famous for its hand-pulled ‘gaetbae’ raft-ferry across the channel.

It is known for Abai sundae and squid dishes, and as a filming spot for hit Korean dramas.

The village grew after the Korean War, when people from the north's Hamgyong region settled here expecting to return home. Its hand-pulled 'gaetbae' cable ferry and its starring role in the hit drama 'Autumn in My Heart' made it famous, and Abai-style sundae reflects those northern roots.
