Why go

The Gwangju National Museum gathers the art and history of the Jeolla region inside a graceful traditional-style building at the foot of the hills.

Its best-known collection is the haul of ceramics and cargo recovered from the Sinan shipwreck off Korea's southwest coast.

The museum is best known for the Sinan treasure — tens of thousands of pieces of Chinese ceramics, coins and cargo raised from a medieval trading ship wrecked off Sinan. Its galleries also trace Jeolla-region art from prehistory through the Joseon dynasty.
