Paldalmun Gate

The great southern gate of Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress, ringed by a lively market and traffic.

Why go

Paldalmun is the imposing south gate of Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress, standing on its own island in the middle of the old downtown.

A two-tier wooden pavilion sits on a stone arch wrapped by a curved defensive wall, with a busy traditional market spreading out all around it.

Built when King Jeongjo raised Hwaseong in the 1790s, it is the largest of the fortress's four main gates — and a natural place to start walking the wall up Paldalsan hill.
