Why go

Seokguram is a Silla-era stone grotto high on Tohamsan above Bulguksa, sheltering a magnificent seated Buddha ringed by carved guardians and bodhisattvas.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed together with Bulguksa temple.

Built in the Silla kingdom alongside Bulguksa, the granite grotto was engineered so that — before modern glazing — the seated Buddha caught the sunrise over the East Sea. Its domed ceiling and ring of relief carvings are counted among the peaks of Silla Buddhist art.
