Where to Stay in Seoul

🔄 Updated August 2026

The best areas & neighborhoods — chosen by vibe, not just price.

Seoul is huge, but the subway makes any neighborhood workable — so choose by the vibe you want. First-timers do best somewhere central like Myeongdong or Insadong; night owls love Hongdae; and Gangnam is the modern, upscale side of the river.

Myeongdong

First-timers & shopping

The classic first-time base — central, packed with hotels, street food and beauty shops, and walkable to Gyeongbokgung and N Seoul Tower.

📍 Airport bus stops here; Lines 4 & 2. Can be busy and touristy.

Hongdae

Nightlife & budget

Young, artsy university district with live buskers, indie shops, cafes and the city's best nightlife. Great value guesthouses and hostels.

📍 AREX runs direct to Incheon Airport (~50 min). Lines 2 & 6.

Gangnam

Upscale & modern

Sleek, business-y and pricey — luxury hotels, COEX mall, K-pop spots around Apgujeong. Further from the historic centre.

📍 Lines 2, 3, 7 & Sinbundang; convenient for Suseo/SRT trains.

Insadong & Jongno

Culture & palaces

Traditional heart of Seoul — tea houses, galleries, hanok stays and a short walk to Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon and Changdeokgung. Quieter at night.

📍 Lines 1, 3 & 5. Very walkable for sightseeing.

Itaewon

International food & diversity

Seoul's most international quarter — global restaurants, the most halal options in the city, and a lively bar scene.

📍 Line 6; close to Yongsan and N Seoul Tower.

Dongdaemun

Shopping & budget

Around-the-clock fashion malls, the futuristic DDP and cheap late-night eats. Handy if you want to shop till dawn.

📍 Lines 1, 2 & 4; central and well-connected.

💸 On a budget? Hongdae and Myeongdong are packed with dorms, guesthouses and hostels — great value and social, and popular with younger travellers.

Good to know

Seoul rewards a central base — anywhere along Subway Line 2 puts most sights within a short ride, and 24-hour convenience stores and late trains mean you rarely feel stranded.

Rates run highest around Myeongdong and Gangnam, while Hongdae, Mapo and Jongno give better value with plenty of character. Many hotels hold your bags before check-in, which helps after an early KTX or airport arrival.
